Rake lockpicks?

Postby Grant » 3 Dec 2006 1:31

Hello,

I am just getting started with this lock picking thing. But yes I can pick alot of Master locks and American locks and like my house and just other random locks.

But I am lookings for some rake lockpick set. I hear they are alot easier then picking. So I am going just play around with them But I have a 14 piece lock step and I have bought one more pick.. so now I have 15 and I have 3 standard rakes... But I want different types of them.. I have watching a lock pick movie thing. And they said they had soemething of jiggers or something I don't know but I just wanted to know if you knew anywhere to get some different rakes I can buy?

you might be interested in something like the HPC computer generated pickset. they are jigglers of sorts. also check out raimundos bogota picks.

as far as buying goes check out www.lockpickshop.com they sponsor the site and if you use cupon code lp101 they give you 10% off.

Lockpickshop.com does not have a very good selection when it comes to jigglers. I am getting the High Tech Pick set for Christmas. They almost act as keys when a little bit of jiggling is performed. I have heard some good things about them compared to the Computer pick set. Some people don't like the Computer set but in my opinion I find the High Tech set the best deal 16 picks with 4 tension wrenches and you can't go wrong! For only 49.95 it is a steal! I don't want to sound like a salesperson so I will stop. If you want to take a look at these sets they can both be found on lockpicks.com

My favorite jiggle set.

those things are pretty delicate as picks go. maybe they are not a good thing for a newbie hand. besides, as far as picks go, they are more than a little pricey.

well he DID ask about jigglers... so i figured i would tell him where to get them. i have a small set of a few home made copies of the computer generated pickset... they work scarily well for some locks and not at all for others. oh and just to not sound too biased lockpicks.com has a really great selection of just about everything.

i found a set of the HPC CG picks listed for about $40 somewhere. i guess if anyone here is interested, i could dig up the info again. but if i recall correctly, the place wants your ALOA number, so it'd be of no use to most people here.

so if i get a high tech pick set.

http://www.lockpicks.com/index.asp?Page ... &ProdID=32

or...better yet should I get them? I don't know how hard it is to learn them. But by the way you guys have been saying it sounds harder then just to rake? I thought it would be something of the same thing. But I don't know should I get them?

Hey, welcome to the site and such. Everyone gets this lecture so it is not directed at you necessarily...

first off always follow these simple rules:

1) Search before you ask, this makes life better for everyone because there are less repeat threads and we're not answering the same "what is a bump key" type questions over and over.

2) DON'T PICK LOCKS YOU RELY ON!!! This means if the lock is attached to a door, cabinet, vehicle, chastity belt, casket, whatever... unless it is there for the SOLE PURPOSE of being picked, DO NOT PRACTICE WITH THAT LOCK. You CAN and WILL break it... and then your in trouble.

3) DONT PICK LOCKS YOU DONT OWN!!! The only thing worse then breaking the lock attached to your sister's chastity belt is breaking a lock you don't own. Unless you are a locksmith or have EXPLICIT permission to pick a lock, with the owner understanding the lock may be damaged, DO NOT PICK IT.

That being said check out these places for helpful information on getting started.

The MIT Guide to lock picking can be found:

HERE

the LSI Guide to lock Picking can be found:

HERE

and check out EVERY link found on this page, they are all great:

HERE

spring steel picks are high quality steel that is thin and a bit flexible so it wont bend in half on you or anything (with normal use). only problem is they could rust if you throw them in a cup of salt water or whatever. as far as if you should get the computer generated or the high tech pickset.... well... its not RAKING its JIGGLING. its not terribly hard to learn but you have to be really careful not to bend the picks as they tend to be really thin. if your just learning how to pick the best thing to do is pick up a variety of hooks and half diamonds... like southord, HPC, and peterson. also you should try your hand at making your own picks. if you want to make your own try tracking down the falle pick templates for some interesting and very functional picks.

in the end most on this forum prefer single pin picking over raking because its more reliable and takes a bit more skill. raking and jiggling can be a valuable skill but it can only take you so far.

yes not to be mean but you are new to these forums... never hurts to be shown where some useful information is hiding.

check out these slides that show you why security pins are fun to try and pick.

Re: Rake lockpicks?

Postby lockjaw » 4 Dec 2006 21:36

But I am lookings for some rake lockpick set.

I don't know of a dedicated raking set but you can buy individual picks. The SouthOrd rakes are quite good for their price.

I hear they are alot easier then picking.

That is true but it is an unreliable technique. Whether a lock can be raked depends on its bitting. Bitting refers to the particular combination of depths/pin lengths in which the cylinder has been configured. If you look at a cut key the profile is a visual representation of the bitting. If the bitting is 'extreme' i.e. deep cuts followed by shallow cuts and vice-versa then raking is unlikely to be successful. Rake-able cylinders have keys that are rather flat or have a staircase pattern.

So I am going just play around with them But I have a 14 piece lock step and I have bought one more pick.. so now I have 15 and I have 3 standard rakes... But I want different types of them.. I have watching a lock pick movie thing.

There aren't that many distinct rake designs -- you may already have the most common. The Bogota rake is a fine rake that I'd recommend you purchase.

And they said they had soemething of jiggers or something I don't know but I just wanted to know if you knew anywhere to get some different rakes I can buy?

If you just want rakes try SouthOrd. Do you mean jigglers that are used for wafer locks? If so, I wouldn't bother with them. You can use your standard picks (and perhaps a two-pronged tension wrench) to open wafer locks.
