Failed mech on UPVC door

Postby srv » 11 Dec 2006 14:50

Hi,
Wonderin' if anyones got any advice concerning a upvc door problem.
I've got a door with a failed mech...the lady forced the handle tryin' to lock the door....the handle/spindle cam is now just spinning.
I've removed the handle and managed to contact the slider bar throught the fixing screw hole ( had to drill through inner door skin ). I can move the bar and unlock the top series of bolts/cams ( not sure exactly what the bolt configuration is ) but the bottom locks aren't budging...i presume the bar is damaged or disconected from the bottom locks.......Can't see anyway of unlocking the bottom locks other than removing centre door panel and drilling onto the bar or bolts.......
Not sure if i wanna get involved with removing the centre panel, was worried that if i do, it may be a bugger to get back in fully sealed and that the door may lose it's shape and need re-aligning when it goes back in.....

any advice ?

Have you tried spreading the door from the frame to see, at the very least, what bolt, roller configuration it has? Some rollers can be teased out of their keeps, start at bottom and work your way up. Or once you can see one of the roller/bolt/hooks then a small bit of sharp force on it (in the right direction) can knock the mechanisim into the unlocked state.

Does she have another door fitted at same time by same company? Could give you an insight into what is fitted on the problem door.

If you havent done so already, make sure the key has been used to unlock it first. But you probably have!!

regards

Thanks for the reply.
If only it were locked on the key !!!...that'd do me fine...lol
The problem is that the door is very tight...even at the top where the bolts appear to be released, or as good as. The door apparently has beeen gettin' really differcult to lock over the last few months, so i think it's probably fallen or warped slightly, and this, as you know makes it really differcult to get play/movement around the cams.
When i shoot back there tommorrow i'll give it a go with an air wedge....to be honest, i'm not sure how helpful it'll be because when i got onto the slider bar via the handles....i was gettin' some serious force on it...and like i said...the bottom bolts weren't shiftin' at all.

These pvc door jobs are a pain in the arse !!!!

Try taking the door off at the hinges!

I would probebly take the glass out and give it some, these doors are very forgiving.

Thanks for the replies guys !!
Ponsalti...it doesn't have a removable glass panel...it just has one large centre piece with a little pre-fitted glass window.
I'll defo have a look at the hinges and see if there's anyway i can get'em off. On some of the doors where i've had this problem before, it hasn't always looked possible to get the door off the hinges whilst the doors closed as you need to lift the door from the hinge pin. The hinge to door fixing screws are usually concealed and the cover unscrews from the inside of the door. I'll have a look though just in case.

always a way

Postby unjust » 11 Dec 2006 19:31

if nothing else, a way to remove a door is to sawzall off the hinges, or pry them open.

learned that trick from a antique woodwork harvesting fellow (pulled nice wood from building scheduled to be demo'd and the good hardware) he used it when the screw heads were too stripped out to pull the hinges as it was faster than drilling them out. i never quite understood how 4" of brass with a sawzall was faster than a drill but he was an entertaining/insane fellow who i ran into on a few remodel jobs.
