First Pick Sets, First Door Project

Postby Infinite.Proof » 22 Apr 2004 15:48

Hey there,
I have always been interested in lock picking and had no means of getting started until i found the wonder Ted the Tool (MIT Guide) to lockpicking. It helped me gain a fundamental understanding of lockpicking and now locks really work. I recently purchased a 14 peice set of lockpicks (including the four tension wrenches). So i got them in the mail and i am somewhat lost at this point. Here is a picture of the picks that i got spread out across some paper.

My first question would be which pick should i start working with first?

Also what is the difference between the normal tension wrenches and the one with the twist in it?(Is it defective?)

Image

Here are three view points of my dorm room door which is the first door i have been tryin to pick. I have been using pick A and B and i can get most of the pins set....i think, because when i let the tension wrench go slowly i can hear each of the pins click back down. Also if the pins are on the side like they are in this door is it harder, easier, or do i need to use a different technique with the pins than i would if it were to be upright or upside down?

So to sum up my random questions because i tend to rattle on.

1) Which picks should I start with, and is there a difference in the tension wrenches?

2)Is my door different because of the way it is set? What pick would be best for this door? What techniques would you all use?

Thanks in advance for any help

well, the pics didnt show, but if you want to try and rake the lock, try a half diamond , thats the first on after the case ok,

and you could try a hook, thats the fifth pick to the right

put light tension to, the way the key normally opens the lock. You should be able to see and feel some of the pins that have set.

Good Luck! :D

Welcome to the site. You're pictures aren't working, but I would highly recomend not attempting to pick the lock on your dorm room. I am also in college and was curious to see if I could pick the lock on my door so I went out and bought a padlock that used the same kind of lock, it is a bad idea to pick a lock where to owner of the lock has not exclusivly given you their permision.

the pics worked at first, oh well.

I was fiddling around with the lock for about a half an hour...

Then all of a sudden, bam! I opened it!

I was pumped jumped around the room...

Then when i opened it the bad news hit....

I went to relock it and try again...and my key wont go into the hole...perhaps one of the pins fell down into the lock? I am not sure....

Any ideas?

Didn't like my advise huh? That is one of the reasons that you don't pick locks you don't own or have permision to pick. Call maitnence and tell them your lock is broken and then don't ever try and pick it again.

I didn't read your advise until it was too late lol.

But i DID fix the lock, for some reason since it was unlocked with picks instead of a key it needed to be relocked with the picks. So when i relocked it with the picks i can put my key back in and it functions normally again.

But i am taking your advise, im not messing around with that lock ANY more.

You probably didnt turn it back to the neutral position after you picked it. Thats why your key wont enter. Never ever learn to pick on a lock thats actually being used as a lock.

Learn from your mistakes!, And atleast you worked out how to rectify the situation.

It's also not a good idea to let anyone else in the dorms know you have these tools or capabilities..... Some people might think you are up to no good !

I suggest going and buying a padlock to work on or a normal door lock...just to practice on...
