UK lockies - advice pls

Postby horsefeathers » 27 Dec 2006 16:16

Like most people here we have a nice new fitted kitchen, nothing special, just the sort from B+Q. Now supposing we keep all our medicines in one of these cabinets. Now suppose that wife wants good secure lock put on the door of one to stop a rugrat attack!. Forget those white plastic things on lower cupboards that require pushing down to release, she wants a real good lock with a key (like a yale type or similar). So the Q really is.....what would you fit? Remember that the unit door doesnt fit into the carcass frame, but butts against the front edge. Cant really fit a till/cupboard lock (like Union 4143) as the bolt comes out too close to the the edge of the carcass, unless the lock body is packed out away from the back of the door which would look dreadful. Any ideas - ideally with model of lock you suggest! And pls no-one say look in the Duffells catalogue - lost mine (had it nicked), long story, fed up).

Actually it is not for my own home, but this has been asked of me by my nearby residential home who have such a unit in their kitchen and want to turn it into a medicine cabinet, (no - they dont want to buy anything specific for purpose!!). The residents are adults with learning difficulties and social problems but that doesnt mean that they are all dumb, So you see why a good keyable lock is required.

Sorry to discriminate but since I am in UK I am asking other UK peeps a Q which refers to something they may have in their homes. Other countries' peeps probably use the same units but as I dont know if yours have the same dimensions etc I dont want to get bogged down with too much info ....

regards

PS - Christmas comes but once a year and when it's gone I give a cheer!!!! Humbug!

Just stick any cam lock on there,
Tubular or wafer either way a rugrat isnt getting in there,

All you need to do is simply cut a slot in the frame and screw a window lock keep (the plate you get with a slot in it) over that for strength if they are simple chip board cabinets that have seen better days,

Well firstly I have to say that I am surprised that the home does not have to provide a proper drugs cabinet which is bolted to the wall as I thought this would be the case under H&S regs and having worked with people with learning disabilities I have always known this to be the standard practice in residential homes that I have been to.
However this said you have asked for our opinion on a suitable lock and I would suggest the following

Its 22mm so may have to put a small packer of wood behind it as most doors are 15-18mm done neatly this can look good I would also suggest a piece of angle steel on the keep side as extra security and strength

Thanks guys - I have thought of the above with packing as like the Union 4143 i suggested in my initial post. Just not sure my packing piece would look as good as I would like. And forgot to mention that they ideally would like both locks to be keyed alike. Can the Union or the yale be easily rekeyed (I imagine so)?

Dont know why they dont have proper cabinet! These units are in a newly built extension to the home, maybe they have a proper one somewhere already and are going to be using the new ones for a different purpose (though i was told as a medicine cabinet)

Lock's from standard locker's fit these door's very well I fitted several for a mate living in shared accomadation. But as I explained to him a lock on that type of cabinet is a waste of time.Talk to your pall and get a proper cabinet to suit his purpose as legistration in them places is scary. The only home I have fitted a proper drug cabinet in was bolted to an exterior wall within a double locked cupboard that contained the drug's trolley.
