taking apart lock - not sure how to proceed

Hello everyone!
I recently tried to take the lock apart and see how far i can go, this is the result:

I was just wondering how can i continue so i'll get something like on this page: viewtopic.php?t=10505

The specific diffculty i'm having right now is to figure out what the black thing on the backend of the lock is for, when i plug in the key and try to turn it, it seems to just rotate with the key.

Any help on this matter is much appreciated!

Yes, you will get the same result as those pictures. As to the "black thing" don't worry about that, that is the rod that turns the bolt when it is put together. See that knurled collar that the black thing comes out of? Well you want to unscrew that next. You will have to depress a locking pin to turn it though.

just experiment. watch what you do and try to reverse engineer it. thats how to do it.

just work your way down until it is bare. write down or diagram what you do if need be.

i did the same thing, i saw a thread on lock disassembly, and decided to buy a lock to take apart, i promtly ruined it and had to forcibly take it apart to fix it, but in order to fix it i had to take the entire thing completely apart. i learned so much, i have that same lock on my desk not a foot away from me still.

Click my www button for more info on stripping your lock, as said the next thing is to unscrew the knurled nut to remove the tail piece then the lock will be dissasembled the same way as the one in my guide on the www button,

as gast said, take that knurled cap off the back, do not use force, look at it closely and find the pin gast mentioned, then with the tip of a pick depress it and the cap will turn, you will remove the cap, the pin that held it from unscrewing, and the spring beneath the pin. you must account for these parts when replacing them so put them in a pill bottle now. they are very small and will get lost. As you go on to dissasemble it, some here recomend that you work inside a clear plastic bag, there are parts that are under spring pressure and can shoot out. I use a towel or other soft surface because if you are on a hard and flat surface, the little pins can bounce and jump actively, but a soft surface will dampen their ability to do this. if these little springs and pins hit shag carpet, finding them again is gonna be a hobby all to itself.
