Also, for a nonlethal weapon, try repacking some 12 gauge shells with rock salt. Bad range, but it'll burn like a motherf&*^#$

Or go with a 60 cal handgun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lzri8dn7p0
The vids real good for a laugh, doesn't seem like a practical gun though

As for house security, not every thing has to be high tech, don't forget the basics like no hedges, bright lights, good frame work and hardware, and dogs. Most of which were already mentioned. However, I would stay away from motion sensetive lights, as they can be beaten, I'd just go with some brights that are always on.

Now, lets say you do all this. High security locks, special doorframe, special windows, etc.
A professional burglar might see all this, and become interested. Here's the problem, you're assuming the entry will have to be through a door or a window. What if they cut a hole in the roof or wall?

Alarms could help prevent this, I know you're against them, but they'd be one more layer of security. Of course they can be beaten, but that'd take a lot of work.

As for a safe, lookinto the ones that can be cemented into the concrete basement....

Max thank you I will for sure do that during the meantime. It is a lot easier solution  . The Alarm system does sound like a good idea for the future especially since I will be adding so much high tech security. I might also lock up the crawl space in order to prevent the burgular to break into it and saw a hole up through the floor  I know what I am doing is over the top and just plain stupid in some peoples opinion but that is the way I am. If I installed a medium security cylinder on my door every day I open and closed it I would be thinking to myself I wish I got the Abloy. It is just the way I am. Go all out or don't even bother.

P.S. I like guns but I never plan on buying one. I can deal with a burgular by myself with a few other weapons I have if I am home. This is mostly for when I am away.

Also plan wiring for intercom and electronic door release if you like to go over the top. I have a Weiser power bolt on my door and I connected it to my alarm so that when the alarm arms the door locks.
There are 4 cameras on the exterior of my house and the neighborhood knows it. No one comes into my yard without getting a phone call or visit where I show my "displeasure" over their actions. Yes I am territorial . The video system has provided evidence in one B&E and the theft of two bikes from a neighbor, so they no longer feel that I am invading their space as I am protecting everyone

Think of superglue if you cannot remove the tailpieces. the tailpiece will still float but you could not bump/pick the cyl

protect against brute force kick in/smash in/smash and grab get rienforced jamb braces or jamb wraps their not hard to install.

hide spare keys or lock them up dont hang them on a hook in the kitchen next to the window @ the door...

bolt down the safe a good class 2 ul or better

a dog

a security system with all window and door contacts.they can install 2 contacts in windows for venting and still have security
