spool pin problem

Heres and original "problem". I can't get the spools to false set. I've tried different amounts of tension and everything i can think of, but they seem just like regular pins. I even repinned it so that there was one in the very front and watched it go up without a false set. Do Brinks spool pins just suck or am I doing something wrong?

Some locks come with spool pins that doesn't perform very well, I had some experiences like that myself in the past, can't remember what lock it was. Or maybe the other reason is that you are a born natural to lock picking and you are really really good at it.

are the bottom pins too large, and are allready lifting the spool's edge from catching on the side of the chamber? Are they actual spool pins or mushroom pins? Mushroom pins upside down could do didly squat if they're upside down...

Are you picking a deadbolt of padlock? Did it come with spool pins or did you add them from a different lock?

It's a padlock? If you are new to spool pins, I would work on something other than your Brinks. I tried a Brinks 5-pin with spool padlock for my first security pin lock... couldn't do anything with it. Not true sets, false sets... nothing.

I bought spool pins for my residential cylinders, starting at the cheepie kwiksets and moving on to others. After getting the feel of them on cheaper, regular locks, move on to your padlock. Tension is key (light tension) for spool pins. Having to combat the force of the spring-loaded plug in the padlock doesn't help practicing tension.

The better the loclk the less effect the spools will have in theory,

If the 'pin line' is very good another pin will bind before the spool can false set,

If another pin is holding the plug from turning that little bit more then the spool will not have any effect,

When you try to false set a pin set it so it surely must be in the middle of the spool and then try the other pins, you will likely find that one or two have gone tight,

If that is directed towards me: "yes". I bought full repin kits (circa $75 a piece) for kwikset and schlage and these didn't have them. I had to order the spool sets separate and got some for my best cores as well.

I wouldn't be opposed to using mismatched spool pins in a lock as an exercise though; I would imagine, though not working as intended, it would give excellent experience because it is likely you could encounter a lock pinned the same in the future.

On a sidenote, Shrub, I have recently purchased an Abloy 242 that has no key. The guy who sold it to me included some object (not a key for this lock). I know this is an advanced forum subject and I do not have access there yet, so I was wondering if I could take a picture of them and PM the link to you?
