unless you are just going to be picking for a half hour before your interests move on, paper clips are a bad tool, they won't help you learn because they introduce difficulties added on to the picking problem. You will find that the paper clip is not a good piece of spring steel, in fact some of the larger hairpins are much better mcguyvers.
you only need one pick, most would recommend a small or medium hook, and I would suggest a halfdiamond, homemade, some of the commercial diamond picks are all shaft with the pick point only a little above the shaft. make your own. use a file or grinder, if you use motorized tools, wear safty glasses.
