Best depth & spacer keys

Postby Eyes_Only » 27 Apr 2007 8:00

I'm goning to start working with a couple Best locks and SFIC pinning tools I bought a few months ago and I was wondering about the key cutting process. I plan on just using my FB key machine and although it has a micrometer for the depth setting, I don't have the spacer kit for it. So thought I could just get a Best depth and spacer key set to help out with that. But the question is, would the depth & spacer key set thats made out of one type of key blank also work out for the many other blanks with different keyways or would I have to purchase a depth key set for each different type of Best keys I plan to cut?

Spacing is consistent across the standard keyways. I don't know about PKS or Kaba Peaks keys, but from my eyeball measurements they are the same.

General things.
Keep in mind that depths are different for A2, A3, and A4 keying systems.
Keys are tip stopped, so the first cut is actually farthest from the bow
There isn't much room for sloppy cutting on these locks.

I think all of these keys are for the A2 system. They're the ones I plan on working on. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BEST-KEY ... enameZWD1V

if your gonna practice cutting these keys buy lots of the A keyway to learn how to cut these on a foley machine there hard to do at first.there is a differance between accual best brand blanks and ilco you will find this out as you go.wear safety glasses with the foley machine when cutting these blanks especially AG and master blanks.i found cutting the key reversed in the machine works very well.any questions just ask around.

Thanks for the tips. My main goal here is to combinate my Best cores and get a working key, including a control key, so I know I'm picking a actual working SFIC lock. It's a lot of trouble but this is what gives locks the hack value it has for me.
