Sanding your picks.

I bought a cheap lock pick set, and it's grinding the pins in my locks.

Does anyone have suggestions or tips on sanding your picks? For example, is there a certain sandpaper that works better? Or a certain technique that's recommended? Thanks in advance.

Take a look at raimundo's guide to making a bogota rake I believe he had a pretty good guide to sanding also. Most people recommend starting with a 600 grit. All I had was 800 1000 and 2000. The 800 worked fine then I finished with the 1000 and then some brasso. (I was tired of sanding by the time I was done with the 1000.) Just to give it a good shine.

This is the guide he is reffering to, in their you will see that he and alot of us use black automotive sandpaper, progressively finer grits any where from 600-2000 grit.

Where can you get such high-grit sandpaper? I'm having a hard time finding anything over 600.

Charodei, if your local hardware store doesn't have any, there's a very good chance that the local auto/body supply will. If not, either place would probably be able to special-order it for you.

I've never looked for sandpaper online but I'm sure it's out there, too.

I saw some at walmart last night...where they sale their car touch up paint. They had from 600 to 2000. That is the 1st time I've seen it there so I guess its new, but if not as stated earlier your local autozone, advance, etc should have it. I think it was about $3 for 5 or 6 rectangle sheets.

i sand them down with 400 then take out the dremel and a polishing wheel and put some brasso or some other metal polish and go to town

I have a guide on here on polishing your picks. search under author kspec. I think it will help you out alot. everyone else has recommended other peoples, like raimundos which is good also, but I might as well share what i have to offer also
