Alright i know this key does not go to a door it
It doesn't have a hole in the tip nor is the tip lathed down smaller then the rest of the shaft .

It's for a warded lock, probably a very old mortise lock on a door, most likely an interior door, or as schuyler said a trunk, maybe a furniture lock (bureau, desk, cabinet, etc.), possibly an old padlock but I'd lean towards a furniture lock of some type. Whatever it's for, it would be old, probably 50-75 years minimum...

Thats one of a couple generic after-market bit keys used to replace keys for older style mortise locks. It will work in many, many locks.

it is either as devil dog said and the deep cut at the center suggests this, or its what jryanruch said and 'surprise' it can be called a skeleton key.

ordinary bit keys are somewhat thick, keys made to work in a variety of these old interior doors are thinned down and thus got the name skeleton key.
