Hey all, new here. I'm having a bit of a problem...
Earlier today my younger sister decided to have a go at my door and managed to get it locked and shut with everyone on the outside. Now, this wouldn't be a problem except we've just moved into the house a few months ago and we don't have a key for the door. We phoned the previous owners and in the 8 years they've lived in the house, they never locked that particular door.
To make a long story relatively short, I've been on the door all day with homemade hook picks trying every method I can read about online. Unfortunately, and this is the problem, the pin that is in the front of the lock seems to me to be well... "dead." When I push the pin up with a pick I feel no resistance from a spring or anything.
Could it be that this pin is broken and my door won't unlock? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get back into my room. I'd rather not call a locksmith because according to the yellow pages there are none nearby.
Again, this is my first time on the boards and if this is the wrong board for this or if this question has been addressed elsewhere I apologize.

Unfortunately, Bashy, the honest answer is that this is the wrong board.
We are not a do-it-yourself locksmithing site, but a do-it-yourself hobby picking site. We have a strong ethos against picking locks that are in use-- for the very reason you described.
The lock sounds damaged, probably a weak spring or who knows what, and this is often the result of egar young hobby pickers who can't be arsed to buy an unimportant practice lock that they don't have to rely upon to function. It would be against our better judgment to advise you to pick it and possibly damage it some more.
We also cannot give you advice on how to open the door through bypass methods. We do not discuss bypass, for obvious reasons, and this may be the only way to get the door open at this point.
I can only suggest that you call a locksmith if you want the door opened without any damage. Though, we cannot guarantee that the locksmith you call isn't going to cause damage-- so it's up to you to find one who is worth their name.
Failing that, I'm sure you can come up with ways to get rid of the door. We just can't help you with it.
And, to be honest, it wouldn't have mattered if you asked this question differently. If the question was asked in a hobbiest light, we would have suggested you disassemble the lock to investigate the damaged pin. Obviously, this can't be done if the lock is in the door.

Thanks guys, I got it open finally.
Raccoon, thanks for the info on the boards and whatnot. Today has definitely piqued my interest in lock picking as a hobby and I'll be sure to pick up a deadbolt to practice on the next time I hit the hardware store.
