American Lock pin size

Postby Noah » 25 Jun 2007 0:16

I'm attempting my first re-keying of an American Lock padlock cylinder. After looking at the service manual key data, measuring some pins with a caliper and doing the math, I'm beginning to think I was given some wrong sized pins. Simple question - what size SHOULD an American #8 bottom pin be?? :-)

Thanks!

Which service manual are you looking at, and what are your measurements?

I was looking at the key cuts in the 2006 service manual online. I measured all the other bottom pins and found they start at about .1095" and increase roughly .0150" as the pin number increases. Number 7 was about .2025", but 8 looks like it should be a top pin (both ends flat) and measures .1075". The bag is labeled as American 8 bottom. I'm guessing that must be an error?

If both ends of the pins are flat then yes they are not the proper pins. I dont have any american specs with me at the moment but I can dig around later tonight if I remember to.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

This is what's hand written in our American Lock pin kit for lengths:
#1 - .1094
#2 - .1250
#3 - .1406
#4 - .1562
#5 - .1719
#6 - .1875
#7 - .2031
#8 - .2187

I'm not sure on the acuracy as it's someone elses hand writting.

A pin with both ends flat is a top pin, and measure .140"
