torque wrench...

Postby mikeyickey » 30 Sep 2007 19:46

I was wondering if some one would be able to tell me about tension wrenches.
specifically when looking at lockpickshop.com it says something like 'Medium Turning Tool .078'.
Is that number a measurement or something else?
I ask because im looking for something better then what comes with the basic southord set.
this one ->http://www.southord.com/images/fullsize/PXS-05l.jpg

Thanks in advance

it would be a measurement. I do just fine with mostly SO and Homebrew tension tools.

I think thats the thickness of the wrench.

If you put the wrench at the bottom on the keyway it can get in the way of the pick. A lot of us tend to prefer putting the tension wrench at the top to keep the rest of the keyway open for the pick.

One big thing is to have several wrenches with different proportions. There's no one wrench that will be good for every keyway.
If you want to make usable measurements you'll have to use calipers of some sort, which is probably taking things a little too far.

I make small featherweight tension wrenches with a vise, a pair of pliers and winshield wiper spine, sometimes I grind down the ends a little. For my automotive and heavy tension wrenches I use smaller hex keys with the ends ground down flat in various shapes in sizes, I keep them with my kit, very useful for ford 5 cuts.

If you're in the US the Peterson Flat 5 and the Pry Bar tension wrenches will cover most applications. The rest is personnal preference. I like to use a small DIY wrench I made out of the smallest windshield wiper insert I found for the Abus Buffo padlocks. I also keep a regular L wrench that came with my Souber pickset for picking Mul-T-Locks.
