Insight: JPXS-6 vs JPXS-6F

Postby crwolff » 3 Oct 2007 18:17

im just beggining lockpicking as a hobby

i just want basic skills and attempt challenges for fun

dont really want to carry around a set, so having a handy dandy key chain with decent tools would be neat

can anyone speak for the comparision btwn the two? or if not a comparison, can anyone comment on how one of these may be as a learning/handy tool?

thanks

(sorry if this posted elsewhere)

Apparently the jackknife sets aren't good at all; minimal feedback and hard to use are most people's responses that I've heard.

Why can't you be bothered carrying a set in your pocket? If nothin else you could get a standard set and carry your favourite picks in your wallet.

My opinion is that these are more a gimmick/toy than a useful tool. I would advise staying away with these whilst learning, as already mentioned, they provide very little feedback.

If you search here using the keyword 'jackknife' here, you'll find several discussions regarding the usefulness of these tools. They all seem to express the same sentiment - poor feedback, awkward to use, definately not for learning with.

There are plenty of threads here to help you choose your first pickset, I'd advise reading those & choosing a small set. It is hard to be more specific without knowing your location.

Welcome to the site, hope you stick around and enjoy learning about this fascinating hobby!

many thanks to both of you

first and foremost i want something to learn with

i guess the novelty of having a keychain and workable set appealed to me

i think its clear where i should start

seriously, thanks to both of you

having owned both as well as other pick sets I'd say that if you absolutely have to have one, get the metal one. it's very worth the extra money.

I had it as my keychain for a while.

the best I can describe the feedback from the jackknife set is like eating a bowl of cereal with a shovel; it can be done, but it's awkward.

very cool conversation starter though
Oh look! it's 2016!

I haven't tried them but from what ive herd the southern spec is among the best. But your really DONT need to carry tools with you unless you are a locksmith. lockpicking is a hobby that should stay at home unless you are opening a specific lock for some one thats locked out and you know what you are doing (at this point you don't, no offense. I would think twice before i tried)

Spend any spare cash on better tools and more locks if you are interested in the hobby. Not trinkets on your key chain.

All the best

so its seeming like these tools are a nice thing to have, but unless i actually know what im doing (which i dont) having them as a keychain wont do me much good

also, learning with one of them as my primary set isnt really feasible.

does this sum it up pretty well?

I have the metal jackknife and carry with me always. Its nice to have if you need it and don't have a "real" pickset with you. However, as others have said, its not good for learning and I only use it as a last resort.
