What is a "Locksmith"

Postby nzleagle » 21 Oct 2007 16:19

after reading a thead in the locksmith business area, It brought up a question, what is a locksmith.... It seems very easy to be able to set up a locksmith business, and say your a locksmith, and yet, people think been a locksmith, is all about picking locks, and unlocking cars, and aparently you can be a certified locksmith after doing a 3 day course? whats up with that.

Ive got to do a 3 year apprentiship, including 2 3 week block courses in Australia (as new zealand doesnt have anywhere to do the block courses)

It seems very scary how easy it is to be a "certified" locksmith in diffrent countries around the world, especialy with the knolwedge that locksmiths pick up, and know.

In here you will not need any licensing but a "security clearance" card from the police says enough. The card practically means that you don't have felonies or anything crime related in your history.

On the other hand, if you need licensing, you will, as you said, jump through a couple of hoops and applications and it is done.

So being certified doesn't necessarily mean anything, but this is so heavily country/state dependant, that it is not an easy question to answer.
