strange lock behaviour

Postby Djang0 » 17 Nov 2007 8:11

I'm living in belgium (may be of some interest for the hardware qualification), that's why I'd like you to forgive me in advance, for my poor english knowledge.

Now about the facts... I'm trying for a few days to pick a lock branded "Viro".

Picture of the lock: http://www.lreenaers.be/ser03.JPG

It was a complete pain in the sitting part of my body...Unt'ill I finally eared the gracefull click that means :"yeah!!! smoking!"...

normal behaviour for such a lock is then to have its plug turning and that black thing(of which I don't know the correct english translation) pictured here below to turn as well, in order to activate the (un)lock mechanisme of the door.

Picture with the black thing turning http://www.lreenaers.be/ser02.JPG

What Actually happened after a succesfull picking is that the plug turns but the silly black thing does not! so lockpicking become useless.

Does anyone knows:

1st if there is an additional security mechanisme that I'm not aware (such as pushing tip at the very end of the plug...)?

2nd about "Viro" lock like the one presented here?

3rd if I the most stupid lock picker ever met...I really wonder now...

thanks in advance

I don't know what the problem is, but the part that you are refering to is called the cam.

The cam cannot be permanently engaged with both sides of the cylinder -- otherwise, you would need to have a working key in both sides of the door before you could lock/unlock it (because rotating the cam would require the other cylinder to rotate as well). As a result, the tip of the key normally depresses a pin or plate which engages the cam... if you want the cam to rotate with the cylinder, you will need to depress this with a pick or the long end of a tension wrench. (This is based off the other Euro-profile cylinders I have worked with: I have not had an opportunity to pick a "Viro" lock, but it is probably safe to assume it works in the normal manner.)

Hope that helps!

Is there any way to simulate the key in order to make it turn anyway? then does the plug really need to turn ? if yes, simultaneously with the tip? please help, I want to defeat this lock...

Well... if you cannot get the cam to engage by using a pick or tension wrench, you may find that putting a key (any key which fits) into the cylinder before picking is sufficient to engage the cam with the half of the cylinder you are working on.
