i just learned about this great site a few days ago and i'm sure what i'm about to ask has been asked more then needed, but i looked around didn't see topic for it so here it goes, can you rake spool pin locks? i heard you had to pick every pin. seeing that i'm new to lockpicking i've been working on wal-mart gold brinks lock ( i know that is not much help sorry) and it said it had spool pins and i can get a false set with a w-rake ( hope thats the right name for the pick) but it wont unlock, can i do it with the rake or do i need pick one at a time and if i can rake it will it work for better locks ?

you can rake the lock but you must use very light pressure on the tension wrench if you don'tit will false set almost every time. i use rakeing on them a lot and have had it work very well.

It is actually personal preference, and what you are best at doing. Personally I don't like raking, don't practice it very much, and therefore don't have much of any luck with it. I prefer to pick each pin with a hook pick.

Once you do have a false set with your rake, switch to a regular pick (hook, diamond, ect) and finish picking it with that.

Also, it is a good effort to start with a lock that has security pins in it, but if you are just learning and are getting frustrated with not being able to pick the lock, try to find a lock that does not have security pins in it so you can get the feel of how pick a lock. A cheap Kwikset or Master lock work well for learning. Once you can consistently pick an easier lock, then try playing with the spool pins.

As I only have easy access to Abus and Sterling locks, I had little choice but to start with security pins in padlocks. I think it took a little longer to get the hang of SPP but it was worth it. Mastering the very light tension was the big issue and I still get it wrong on off days.

I now apply very light tension and lightly drag the pick over the pins from the back of the keyway to the front, before going back in and SPP.

i can't rake spool pins personally, but some people can.

I have much better luck with a hook.
