False set ?

Postby Proctor » 30 Dec 2007 12:01

What happens when a lock " False sets " ?

I think i heard on youtube somebody say false set is when the plug moves abit more after scrubbing over the pins ?

If thats true i can get my Masterlock 140 to false set, but after that what should i do ?

Each time there is always 1 pin always " springy "..whats wrong with that ?

Thanks for all the help :)

This link will help you understand false sets. http://deviating.net/lockpicking/02.02- ... m_pin.html

To pick a false set pin simply ease off tension a little bit and push up on the pin. You will feel the plug of the lock turn a bit as you push the spool pin past the shear line. Take a look at the index on the link also. It contains loads of great information.

When a lock false-sets, it turns a bit more than you might expect, but then stops. This happens when the shearline pinches in the gap of a security pin instead of in the gap between the driver pin and the key pin. If the security pin is the driver pin (as it is in most cases) the pin stack needs lifted a little more. Ease off the tension wrench a little bit and push up on the pin you were working on before. You should feel the plug turn back a little as you push the pin up, then the plug should shift back again and set properly. It is possible with spool pins and variations of them that it will have another false set though. Basically, you need to recognize how much the plug should shift for a true set and how much more it will shift for a false set. This is how I do it anyway, although I'm still a relative n00b, but for the locks that I have that have security pins, this works.

these guys are correct. and for your 140 after you get the false set it is the second pin that is the security pin(or at least it usually is) you need to push up.
