Looking for security pins

Postby maintenanceguy » 22 Dec 2007 17:37

I'd like to find a source of small quantities of security pins. I'm thinking of the refill packs for pinning kits but with spools, mushrooms, serrated pins and whatever else is available.

I have a large number of mortise, rim, and kik cylinders and I would like to start experiment with security pins in these. I currently have a few padlocks with security pins but I want something I can re-pin quickly and easily to practice with.

Thanks in advance.

If you only need very small amounts, put some top pins in your drill and turn down the custom grooves with a triangular file. Small lathes work well also. If you want square grooves use a fine tooth hacksaw blade instead of the file.

Another type of security pin can be made from a threaded screw. Run a tap down the top pin holes and then cut off a piece of screw to the length needed. Carefully sand square and smooth both ends. The threads will mesh exactly and freeze the top pin when turning pressure is applied.

I have that kit sold by lockpickshop.com and I highly recommend it. Nearly all the locks I pick for SPP practice has both spool and serrated pins that I loaded up with that kit. It'll take your picking skills to a whole new level.

I just think it is ridiculous to pay $64 for tiny little machined metal pins.

I understand if you are a locksmith and need to maintain a cross-referenced set of proper diameter pins and such, but for a guy that just wants to replace a few pins with security pins?

There has to be a better option.

I mean, we are talking about product that can't be worth more than about $3 per pound!

I see a great market opportunity here for someone to begin producing security pins for the lockpicking community....

Simple security pins are easy to make. Buy them in large quantities if you need an assortment for regular rekeying.

These are samples of making security pins with a cordless drill, files and extra pins. A Dremel might also work well as the 1/8 collet may close down to .115. All five took only about 20 minutes to make.

Original materials before starting.

I haven't really thought about making my own security pins. That is a really good idea. I have a bunch of extra pins that I think I am going to try to turn about 2/3 of those into security pins.

Thanks for the great idea guys :D

I ordered my .190 spool pins from CLK a year ago and I seem to remember their site looking a little better than this..

direct link to the .190 LAB spool pins for $3.50 / 50 pack
http://www.clksupplies.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=22_227&products_id=1330&osCsid=9a8797a0529bcd6d229516327a880f90

(And yes, its a 50 pack, not a single spool pin for $3.50, I'm not sure why they don't mention this fact or show a photo of the baggie they are packaged in.)

Here are photos of the LAB .190 inch pins:
