Question about picking Best Icore lock

Postby Flavahfav » 26 Mar 2008 20:40

ok, here's the background...It's a best icore "A" keyway I think. It's mounted in a door on the right side. I picked it with an S rake counter-clockwise but it would only spin 180 degrees and get stuck. Now I know on most locks the pins will fall back into the cylinder slightly so you need to rake lightly again for it to go past 180, but this wasn't true with this lock. There was one pin in the very front preventing me from spinning it back clockwise but no matter what I did it wouldn't go the other way and unlock the lock. Any suggestions? I've done as much research on icore as I can and still haven't found an explanation. Also, to pick it to the control line do you always turn clockwise no matter which way the lock spins to open? Thanks in advance.

I-Core woes

Postby fjardeson » 26 Mar 2008 21:24

Flava - I work with a lot of I-Cores at work (probably since I'm the only one there that knows jack about locks :) ) Here's some hints:

1) 180 Degrees - baaad - the problem is that you may have dropped some drivers into the bottom of the lock. To construct the lock's bible (top pin chamber) some locks have holes in the bottom of the lock. Try turning the lock upside down and gently rapping it on a hard surface while (gently!) turning the key.

2) Control - it IS a standard, if you are picking to the control shear it always turns clockwise. Barely 15 degrees, so if you feel the plug turn a bit, try gently pulling out the IC - you might have picked it and not known! It is rare for these to have spools or mushrooms so if the cylinder turns a bit, you might have hit the control shear.

Enjoy! I've always liked IC's, pure lockpicking at its best :)

Awesome! Thanks for the help. The problem is that I don't have the key. And the lock is mounted in the door and locked. So how then do I construct the 'bible" lol? I'll try picking it to the control line tonight.

the 'bible' is the top(or bottom in some cases) where the springs go and the pins enter when the key is used, sounds like you have a project in front of you getting the pins out of the bottom of the lock....the plug still wont turn right? Try using a pair of foreceps(the medical pliers for like doing stitches) and lift the pins up...may have to take the lock apart.

I can turn it back to the locked position fine if I push that first pin back up past the sheer line and the lock will continue to operate normally. I've tried plug spinning it both ways but no go. If I get it picked again I'll take a picture. But keep in mind I have no key and the door is locked so there is no repinning as of yet. Thanks again!!!

Please read the rules of the site. Do not pick locks that are in use, you can and will damage them. Since this is a mounted IC core lock I'm betting it's not on your house and you do not own it. Come on guys, you know better than to encourage posters like this.
