alright pick handle making

ok,
step 1: (very rough drawing lol) take a 2x4 about 7 in. tall.

Step 2: cut 2x4 in half hotdog style =]

Step 3:tkae a drill or router (possibly a rounded chisel) and boar out a smooth half handle shape...repeat on the other side.

Step 4: Test, and see if it lines up and fits, if it does cut a divit on the top so it is easier to pour the resin in.

Step 4.5: Vice that mutha licka!!

Step 5: Well...pour in that resin (im useing EnviroTex Lite Pour on High Gloss Finish[will this work?])

Step 6: Set your pick in and fasen it so it is straight and stays put.

ALSO I NEED TO KNOW IF I COULD PUT CLEAR TAPE IN THE WOODEN MOLD SO IT DOESN'T STICK...AND IM THINKING ABOUT PUTTING A LIL' FOOD COLOURING IN IT TO ADD A SEE-THRU COLOR TO IT...

If this will work i will post actual pictures of the project..please respond =]

Wood is porous, so if you don't want all sorts of pits and interesting shapes on your handle (though you could probably sand them out), you might want to slap some polyurethane finish on the wood before using it to mold handles...might work well, though.

For sure paint the inside the mold with a polyurethane or similar. before you pour the resin coat the inside of the mold with release agent. The release agent will come away with the handle and washes off with water.

sounds like it would work if you used the polyurethane/release agent but instead of making a mold from wood couldnt you just use a pipe that is the diameter you want and crush it in a vice if you wanted a more oval handle then plug one end of it... it would probably be easier then making two identical cuts into two halves of the wood mould but it is about 5:30 in the mourning so its very possible that theres a huge flaw in my idea im not realizing anyways im off to sleep :)

Easier to make that hole with a drill first and then cut that block in half ;) The missing material because of the cut can be replaced with a small piece of thick paper or similar, like a gasket.

For release agent a smear of grease works wonders. Just wipe a small layer of it on the surface of the hole with your finger and it should provide enough release :)

I think I might try this myself too, althought I think I'll find aluminum block easier than wooden one :P

Sounds like a cool idea. Oh, don't forget that 2x4 is actually closer to 1 1/2" by 3 1/2" when measuring. I would get "clear" lumber as opposed to "treated" or the standard "untreated". Clear lumber is supposed to have a tighter grain, and be free of knots and other defects. The better grade should also assist the release agent.

Jaakko's made a great point about drilling the hole first. Also, If you are going for an elliptical shaped handle, you could leave the 1/16â€

If you sand smooth the area of the wood that will form the shape of your handle and seal it as stated with a thin coat of polyeurothane, you can simply spray both pieces with pam non stick cooking spray or use another household cooking oil such as olive oil etc sparingly. You may need to experiment a bit to be sure that what you are using as a release agent does not affect the curing of the handle material you are using.

I know this is an old post, and this is only for anyone who may come across it in the future. I haven't been on since the forums updated, but this post was originally about 3-4 times longer with pictures, descriptions, and suggestions. I really don't know what happened to the rest of it =)
