Picking a Master Magnum

Postby keycode » 16 Oct 2008 23:09

I've seen videos that make it look pretty easy, although a few I am surprised that the picks didn't break off inside during some of them.

I've raked the lock a few times although since I can't do it every time, I'm pretty sure there was some luck involved. I really want to pick and not rake it though.

Here's the lock: http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-142388/Detail

When I'm picking it, it seems like after I set a pin or 2, I end up having to put too much tension on to make anything else bind. Even for the first pins to bind it seems like I'm having to put too much tension on.

I'm not getting the feedback I get on other locks like when the plug slightly turns with a bind.

Any advice or links would be helpful.

Thanks

After reading through tonight and seeing a video on detecting security pins, it seems like that is exactly what I'm coming across.

Based the info I'm reading, it looks like raking is the primary way to handle this. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I doubt very much it has security pins. it looks like a run-of-the-mill 4-pin master lock cylinder. you might to try easing up on the tension. too much tension will not let you pick some stacks, and some stacks could end up being overpicked. raking is also not the solution to security pins. If it does have a spool pin, take a hook, false set it, and press down on the pin you think is a security pin. you should feel a slight counter rotation on your tension, and if so just keep pressing and releasing the tension a tiny bit until it sets.

You are right on one thing, raking really does depend a lot on luck.

Well, I have to say I've had the same problem. I can rake it open, but have yet to be able to pick it open with a hook.. The master Magnum lock I have is a bit different looking than that of the pic above - mine has a smooth finish, but I'm sure its probably the same internally (wih octagon "tough cut" shakle).. The package for the lock does not mention security pins of any type..
