US Lock deadbolt

Postby gstrendkill » 15 Nov 2008 14:44

Been a while since i've posted here but im back from my time away from picking :)

A friend of mine told me he would sell me a dead bolt he found around his house. He said it has "US Lock" over the keyhole. other than his description ive never heard of that company. Sorry I dont have a picture, but before i pay for the lock i wanted to ask my good buddys at LP101 if it was worth even getting.

so basically, a good find or some garbage lock?

US Lock is a supplier of locks and lock hardware. They make generic cylinders for all the common keyways from SC1 Schlage to SE1 Segal. I have some US Lock stamped cylinders and I believe them to be better than most generics out there. They're still around, and have a huge selection of hardware items when it comes to doors, locks, cylinders, keys, physical security.

If you're looking for locks to practice on then it sounds like it is worth 5-10$ or so.

The shop I work at is a distributor for U.S. Lock. They are a major distributor, and I find their dbolts to be quite good for the money. The 1680 is the bottom of their cheapest, and we sell them new for 20$.

I've used/sold/installed US Lock products before and they're really really good quality for generic. When it comes to picking practice there should be no difference between them and the products they reproduce.

Do they use security pins in the Schlage knockoffs? To me, that'd be about the only difference between buying this and Schlage.

To be honest with you I never really checked. But I don't recall them being that hard to pick. But then again I've been on many lockout calls on commercial buildings with heavy metal doors using Schlage locks that I was able to pick in like 20 to 30 seconds. And they gave no indication or feedback of security pins being employed in those locks either.
