Only able to turn plug in one direction

Postby Kainex » 24 Jan 2009 4:36

First off I'd like to say im new to the lock picking hobby only been at it a couple of months.

I bought a couple of practice locks one of which i can successfully pick open and close without much trouble anymore, i believe its a 2 pin drawer lock.

My question concerns the other practice lock i have: the lock is a 5 pin Kwikset deadlock. I can successfully lock(plug rotates clockwise) the deadbolt by picking it but i cant unlock(plug rotates counter clockwise) it by picking. I can only turn the plug clockwise. When I try to pick the lock open the plug wont move at all. Lock still works as it will unlock and lock with the key.

Sorry if this has already been posted, I tried looking but couldn't find on forums.

Thanks in advance.

If your DB was on the left side of the door it would be a CW unlock. Try picking in a reverse order CCW. You could use a plug spinner to snap it over the shearline from CW to CCw.

If you are using BOK tesion, then make sure our wrenching isn't binding on the cylinder wall.

The spinner is an answer to getting the plug rotated, you seem to have become comfortable in picking a lock CW, its another learning step to pick it CCW, keep at it m8, you will get there, its practice and tension, those are the main 2 things in learning this skill, i know its a bummer when there is no one there to give live advice, its a lonely road when your sitting there practicing on your own,,,,,,,,,,,, and you have to make your own coffee :D

The reason why you are able to only open in the clockwise position is because that is the locked position. When in the lock position you do not have to move the dead bolt, when you do it counter clockwise you will move the bolt, to move the bolt you can use a plug spinner, a lot of people find it easier to pick the lock in order to lock it. A plug spinner will spin the lock in the other direction before the tumbler can come back down.
