Springy Plug

Postby PoP Lock PoP Bottles » 30 Jan 2009 21:43

Okay so I bought a very cheap padlock ($3) and when I am using my tension wrench to turn the plug, the plug turns back and forth with the feeling of a spring. I am also ashamed to admit that I have not been able to pick this lock. I also don't hear pins set or reset - What is the deal with this lock?

How far does the plug turn before it binds completely, if at all? Sometimes a plug can feel springy because the spring is actually getting sheared between the bible of the lock and the plug, but that's fairly unlikely (though I wouldn't put it past a cheap padlock to do something like that, either). If the pins are blocking the plug from turning, you shouldn't be able to rotate the plug more than a couple degrees in any direction.

Perhaps a picture of the lock and how far you can turn the plug would help.

Some really cheap padlocks can be quite sloppy, but yes, the plug will be sprung loaded. See when you open it with the key how it snaps back to closed when you release the key or put the shackle back in and the locking dog connects.

It sounds like it is probably quite a small padlock, so over lifting pins will be something to avoid, also even though it is sprung loaded just enough is how much tension you need, it is quite easy to put too much on there.

I could be wrong, this is just what i gather from your description. Perhaps some pics would be good if you're still having trouble in a bit.

Cheers :)

The name of the padlock, perhaps the brand is 'The Club'. It is a yellow rubber coated body padlock and is normal sized. It cost 3 dollars (sorry no pics - camera is broken) and I am not getting a single binding pin. I am able to rotate the plug about 15-20 degrees just with the wrench. I don't hear or feels any 'Clicks' and it's pissing me off that I am loosing to the cheapest lock I could find. Plus I don't have a key for it.

Any more insights?

I bought a couple of those club padlocks just for picking practice once, they do feel a little different to me also, the plug itself is a little springier than your common padlock, I think this is because it is made cheap, however, use light tension as there is some spool security pins in there, (was in mine anyways) and just bump each pin lightly and it should pop open, if you have ever picked through all the common master locks, you will soon realize that the club is made about the same, and will open rather easily.

I have found that "The Club" locks are almost identical to Master as well. They are however a great practice lock for the beginner. Work with them a lot and you'll get to the point where you can step up to one you have never tried and open it within 10 seconds. These locks are cheap and simple, so therefore simplicity is the key to picking them. The most common thing with these locks is the novice tends to approach them too aggressively, trying too hard is just like inserting the wrong key. Light subtle movements and you will have these mastered in no time.

Im thinking spool pins. They tend to give you the feeling of the lock fighting back. To pick this one you need light tension.. Hope this helps..
