Bump key help

Postby amaze1 » 29 Jan 2009 22:48

So I decided to finaly start bumping locks after picking for so long. I order some keys but since its not legal so send bump keys i guess i got these depth keys. I read in a post some where that these keys have to be altered in order to work properly. But where do I start it looks like the shoulders have already been shaved off alittle so I im guessing i have to mod the tip somehow. Please help thanks. btw i got these from bumpkey.us

You want to use the "The minimal-movement method", this is where you would filing a tiny bit of metal off both the tip and the shoulder of the key, we can create a bump key that can go just a little bit deeper into the lock. When such a bump key is inserted all the way into the lock, it will be pushed out again a tiny bit by the force of the springs inside the lock, until the pins again rest on the deepest point in the key cuts. We found filing off between 0.25 and 0.5 mm works best, but you may wish to experiment for the best results. http://www.toool.nl/images/7/75/Bumping.pdf is my source of information.

There is a bit of a technique to bumping. It may be that the lock you are trying is a bit tougher to bump.

Can you practice on something else to make sure your technique is "on"? I made a sort of tension wrench one time for bumping. The spot was hard to reach and there was no room for your hand to hold the bumpkey. I just used a piece of window wiper metal about 6 inches long and put a bend in it so that it would grab the key. It was nice cause I wasn't worried about hitting my thumb with the hammer.

The other thing you could try is holding the lock in a vice while you bump it.

I paid like $3 each for the keys and it was altogether $11 with shipping. They accidently sent me two pairs for when I only paid for one
