Key Casting

Hmmm... I used the lost wax method in High School to make rings in art class... We used Pewter as the metal. We had to heat the Pewter in an iron kettle that we placed in some special ovens similar to a kiln.. It worked pretty well and would probably make some good keys. I like the idea of making some blanks! Anyone wanna make up some Primus blanks, heheh there ya go... So much for key control, eh?

I have been thinking about this for a long time, but have not tried it yet... This gives me some inspiration to give it a try All I have is solder at the moment.. I don't think a key made out of solder would be very good... not to mention the lead in it could make you sick.. Interesting idea though, I guess

Key casting definitely sounds especially useful for making your own blanks for impressioning! Has anyone tried impressioning with a homemade blank like this that can elaborate on what works the best!?

If I had to make a copy of a key on the fly, I would just press it in some clay or something then take it back to the shop and decode/cut by code the key from a key blank based off of the impression in the clay.

mcm151201, that's a good idea! As long as you are careful with the clay, that should work just fine! I might do that when I get a decoder card..

You could still cast yourself some blanks if they were unavailable due to some stupid patent... (Make them for personal use and not for sale, of course!)

..but who needs keys anyway? Key control is a joke, but paracentric and corrugated keyways, and sidepins/sidebars really start to make things tough!

I would like to see some pics of how these keys turn out! sounds like they would be pretty nice after a little finishing work!
