Kwikset ANSI Grade 1 stumping me.

Hey I'm trying to get this lock picked and I'm confused about the mechanisms in it. It seems that once a small amount of tension is put on it all of the pins lock in place, not being able to be moved to sheer at all. When I put an insanely small amount of force on the tension wrench I think some pins bind but the cylinder moves way much further than a normal bind, say a full 4 millimeters. Would that mean safety pins? What kind of anti picking barriers are in this lock?

Sounds like you are trying to pick a Kwikset Smartkey, and if you are a beginner, you probably won't be able to open that particular Kwikset mechanism. It is not like the old easy to pick Kwiksets. Is there a small slot or hole next to the keyway where you insert a little tool to rekey the cylinder as needed? Can you show us a pic of it so we can confirm what kind it is?

When you mentioned Grade 1, I can tell you Kwikset doesn't make a grade 1 deadbolt, but the new Smartkey does boast that the actual deadbolt throw is rated Grade 1, but the rest of the lock including the cylinder body is not Grade 1.

This is the only Grade 1 thing about the lock:

If you go back to the store for another lock, get an older Kwikset that doesn't say Smartkey. The lock you got doesn't use traditionally shaped pins, so to answer your question, you aren't getting caught on normal security pins (not safety pins btw)

Good Luck and keep practicing,

Yea, it's a smart key lock. So what shape are the pins? And what kind of technique should I use to bypass them? I'm a little experienced and I found this laying around as an extra, and figured it'd make a nice challenge.

On the subject of smartkey, I recently had to make a key to fit a smartkey deadbolt without the working key. (The guy had a few of these keyed alike) The cylinder came out really easy, just a clip on the back, and one around the end of the plug. Trying to decode the sidebar was really difficult. I finally succeeded, and had a working key. Just when I was going to put everything back together, the sidebar pins all slid out at once, scrambling the order of the pins. It was extremely difficult to get everything back together. Granted, I'd never worked on one of these before, but I found this to be one of the most user-unfriendly locks I've ever had to work on.
