Repairing chipped Medeco key?

Postby Foogoo » 9 Aug 2004 15:29

I have a Medeco key with the tip of on ridge chipped off. All the professional locksmiths I've tried have told me no one can make these keys except Medeco. Problem is, the lock this key is for is very old and nobody has any paperwork or anything Medeco requires. Any suggestions on how I can use the key or make a new one?

A picture of the key would help, but to be quite honest. You've been lied to. Point blank.

Medeco doesn't have to make these keys, there are more than a few machines which are capable of cutting these keys directly by code. Further, since your key is only damaged, it would be simple enough to read the key to get teh proper code, and then cut the bloody thing.

Go to a larger shop where they will most likely have a machine that can cut Medeco keys.

Romstar is, as usual correct. I know of a hardware store in brooklyn ny that has a medeco capable machine. And a full selection of Lookalike medeco blanks. You can just walk up and cut your keys then pay 2 dollars each.

What Level of high-security are Medeco's? Shouldn't their keyblanks be "protected"?

Welll......... Old keyways that have had their patents run out tend to find their way into key blank catalogs. Those that are still under patent tend to find their way into foreign key blank catalogs....

I had some asian food the other night, it tasted good. Peanut sauce mmmm. asian key blank brands can somtimes be of a "lesser" qualitiy.

I guess that's understandable since some shops probably don't want to be held liable for making what could potentially be a restricted key (which is definitly not in my case). Thanks for the info, guess I'll go drive around town some more!
