Binding pins

Postby laf » 21 Feb 2009 14:13

I have trouble finding the binding pins after the first one. The first binding pin is pretty easy to detect but the second one and the third one are for me imposible to find. I usualy pick a lock without finding the binding pins, and it works, but now this lock is driving me crazy. Normally any pins that I lift stay above the shear line but in this lock they just don't set.

Im a noob I know

Picking locks without binding pins? If you've been picking locks without finding the binding pins, consider the lock garbage or yourself lucky. Definitely try to start working with the pins! Just keep working front to back, feeling for the stack with the higher resistance on it. If you're new-new to the sport, then definitely read up on some guides, get yourself a Kwikset, take some pins out, and work your way up to 5 pins by feeling out the sticking pins.

Welcome!

I don't know about Canada, but I'm from the US and I ordered a Kwikset for I think $15 from Home Depot's website

Maybe ebay? Or any other hardware store near you.

We have home depot but I would prefer a lock that comes with extra pins and they do not sell individual top pins.

Home depot sometimes has a Brinks rekeyable padlock that uses the KW1 keyway and comes with a key gauge and set of pins. Aside from that, I don't think you'll have much luck finding a lock that comes with extra pins.

what I did is I took a deadbolt cylinder and cutaway myself to make a practice cylinder. Put some of these in there, and when you can see and feel the feedback of the binding, you know a little more what it should feel like. that is what I did. Now I can pick a four spool pinned deadbolt without much trouble.
