How many locks do you have?

Postby racerboy59 » 11 Apr 2009 2:47

Do you keep all of the locks that you have successfully picked?
If so, how many have you got, and how much has it costed you?

I tend not to keep them as you always want more and the space becomes an issue.

I normally just sell them on to others.

Its an expensive business.

Since i have been picking them forever, No. Especially the ones that I have picked professionally.... In the house, I just keep the ones that my friends & I have been practicing on. I probably have 100 or so, mostly in the sheds, & so forth. Neighbors in the boonies here sometimes need a padlock for their pole building or something - for free of course... :(

At this point since I'm just starting out I am keeping all the locks I have picked. As for the locks I have, it's a long list but *deep breath* here I go.
Oh yeah and abbreviations are as follows
DS: Double Sided
SS: Single Sided
DB: Deadbolt
MC: Mortise Cylinder
IC: I think you know this one
KIK: I also think you know this one
EP: Euro Profile
PL: Padlock

My Lock Collection(currently):
1 Mtn. Sec. DS DB
1 Brinks SS DB
59 Cal-Royal KIK (6-pin)*
1 Kiwkset SmartKey DS DB
36 MC from various manufaturers
2 IC MC*
2 Schlage Primus MC*
1 Re-pinnable MC
~90 various KIK
3 Medeco Switch Locks**
10 Medeco camlock (i think) cores**
2 Sargent Keso MC**
1 Standard EP
1 Fake Abloy PL
1 Discus Dimple Lock*
1 Brinks R70 PL
1 Mstr #140 PL
3 Brinks 40 mm PL
1 Vanlock t-handle core*
1 Schlage Everest KIK*
3 Mul-T-Lock EP**
1 MTL Gearbox PL**
1 Abloy push lock (classic)**
1 Maxis KIK**
Other related items:
2 MTL Pinning Mats
1 MTL Garrison pick

No asterisk-picked at least once
*-Working on picking
**-On the 'some day' shelf

Whew! long list...and more locks are still on the way  (*thinks* 'the first step is admitting you have a problem' problem: which to pick first :P )
As for the total cost, I don't want to look because I might just die of shock.

Cheers,
-XIII

PS A big Thank You to all the LP101 members that have added to my collection, and to all the ones that have helped me throughout my picking journey!
Locks are to jigsaw puzzles like keys are to the picture on the box

Yes.

  • combination bike lock. 4 rings, 4 little fingers on the "shackle" that sticks in from the edge. lock was pretty corroded and the chain (if you can call it that) could be pulled apart by hand, the vinyl coating was peeling off... into the "pick it until it dies" pile. you could peek in between the rings and see how to turn them, that's how worn this lock was.
  • clone of a kwikset deadbolt and doorknob. trivial... must not have any security pins.
  • generic brass padlock.
  • wafer lock on a locking safe dial.
  • a set of practice cores. I "keep" them insofar as I record the code in a spreadsheet.

I find this very difficult to answer as I'm a professional lockie.

In my own personal collection though, I've 307 locks at the moment, plus 2 x 2 gallon buckets of assorted keys. The amount of my own personal money I've spent on them as a hobby (including tools, picks, etc., must be perhaps £10,000? Thankfully that has been over a lot of years though...

Pro lockies will definitly have a lot of cylinders, one lock conversion last week left me with 40 new SC4 cylinders.
I would estimate 900 or so cylinders in my garage, 300 + are high security most of the locks were aquired for free.
