Pinning Depth Question

Postby pliskin52 » 26 Apr 2009 4:41

Forgive me if this is explained somewhere, but I have been unable to find it despite extensive searching. I remember reading somewhere that when re-keying a lock, that 2 pins directly next to each other must be within 7 or 8 depths of each other. So, for instance, a pin at a depth of 0 could not be next to a pin at the depth of 9. I remember hearing this somewhere, but after searching for it again I wasn't able to find an answer for verification. Could someone with more knowledge on the matter clear this up for me? Your help is much appreciated.

Try searching "macs" Maximum Adjacent Cut Specification.

Sort of like the rules for pinning a lock. It can be different for different locks. Also might say something like how many cuts can be the same for a given lock and the deepest cut allowed on the tip of the key, stuff like that.

Ah, thank you very much. That's exactly what I was looking for. I guess it's just a matter of knowing the terminology so you can search for the right thing.

There's a lot of info on MACS in my book on high security locks. Click on my signature of preview on Googlebooks to find out more. MACS doesn't tend to be exlpained very extensively in the LS textbooks. The book has example code to help you work out the number of codes in key series subject to MACS.

cheers
