A plug spinner is a device that quickely spinns the plug of the cilinder around. Its spun fast enough that the bottom pins can't fall back into place.

This allows you to pick the lock in any direction and still be able to unlock the door.

Sometimes for whatever reason you pick a lock, but turn it the wrong direction. (deadbolt type, not padlock) If you turn it back it will just re-lock itself and you will have to pick it again. Some locks are harder to pick in one direction than the other.

A plug spinner is like a tension wrench, but driven by a spring. So once you pick the lock you can use the plug spinner to turn it the other direction if you wish. The spring just turns the plug so fast that the pins don't have a chance to drop and lock the lock.

There are posts here where guys do the same thing with a tension wrench and a rubber band. This is a great idea if you don't want to spend the money or make a plug spinner yourself. There are also stickies that show ways to make your own too.

to add on to barbarian, plug spinners are also use by people who just feel more comfortable picking 1 way or the other, which makes sense. they're also dead easy to make and dead useful when you need one(what isn't, but moving on)which makes them somewhat popular.

This post brought up a very important topic for me. I personally pick in a clockwise direction 99% of the time. My hands are almost always in the exact same position and I try to keep everything consistently the same each time. The reason for this is that I was trying to master the mechanics without introducing too much variation; kind of like when you first learn to shoot a jump shot. You do it the same over and over until you can nail it everytime before you begin to add variation.

But do you think this actually stunts growth in picking? Should I be picking in both directions instead of trying to master one direction?

Also am I limiting the ease of picking as many people have mentioned it can be much easier for some locks to be picked in certain directions.

I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts.

I'd say learn to pick both ways as soon as possible. If you're repinning a core for practice why not try it clockwise and counterclockwise before messing about with the pins...
