UPDATE:

I came home and saw a work order on my desk that reads "Repaired broken lock." I literally jumped for joy (actually, I did shoryukens) a couple of times. Thanks for the help guys, your information persuaded me to be honest and upfront about this stuff and it seems I was on God's good graces!

Whoops, no edit. Obviously I meant 'free of charge' and the original door lock was fixed. No $400 spent!

congrats! What did the maintenance/RA/public safety person say when you told them you had tried to pick it and now the key wont go in?

A. "its ok, I saw your post on lp101.com"
B. "oh god not another student going to mother&$@ing lp101.com!"
C. "ok no problem, you seem nice enough"
D. "we'll fix it right away, but wait till we put you on financial hold at the end of semester"
