+1. The "correct" way to hold a pick is whatever feels the most comfortable to you. Within reason, of course. You still have to be able to feel any feedback the lock gives you.
You know, I agree with you in principle, but sometimes wonder if certain positions are more likely to induce problems like carpel tunnel. One of the reasons I'm trying to train myself out of my odd "ham-fist" grip is because it is easy to get lazy and pick too much with your wrist. After a long session of picking, it's not uncommon at all for my wrist to be a bit sore the next day, which can't be a good thing.
I guess what I'm saying is that a more "pen" grip is probably preferable if you have the choice.
