Bump hammer useful for a NEWB?

Postby TickTockMyLock » 28 May 2009 23:23

Trying to bump using screwdrivers, rubber stopper attached to saw blade, spatula, everything.

I have only bumped once. Would a bump hammer make a huge difference? If so best choice? thinking about a brockhage for 19.99.

This is not intended for those not interested in a bumping discussion, in other words you don't have to read this post or any other post on bumping. I know it has been discussed to death here in the past but after you have been around here a few years almost everything discussed here has. There are threads here that don't interest me, and when I see them I will skip them.

Are you using the pull out method or the minimal movement method? I always preferred minimal movement, but would switch to the pull out method if I was having trouble. What types of locks and how many locks have you tried to bump?

I read in another thread that you have only successfully bumped a lock once. If I remember correctly your key was a Schlage and Schlages can sometimes be difficult to bump. Also Spacing of the cuts are important for the key to work and my bet is that your spacing is off on your key. If this is the case then a bump hammer will not help.

Yeah, I'm using the pull out method. I feel safer with it. I tried shaving the tip and shoulder to do minimal method but I'm worried perhaps i shaved too much...

I've tried bumping Schlage and Kwikset. I actually get the Kwikset Deadbolt lock to work once. I think I broke the schlage (lol). It doesn't seem to work with the regular key now.

I'd like the best method on Schlage and Segal 1 locks as I deal with them the most. I just haven't found a practice segal yet. I bought the keys from I think a reputable source.

I just don't know if a bump hammer is that much better than the back end of a screw driver. If it really makes a big difference.

Bump hammers are helpful but not altogether necessary. The main advantage of a bump hammer is that is springs back naturally, so you don't have to worry about retracting it immediately like you would with a normal hammer, screwdriver, etc. I'm guessing you'd be better off learning how much force to apply, because that is usually more of a problem for beginners.

i bumped quite a lot. But i just can't make it happen without a tomahawk (or a fake one).
So in MY opinion a good bump hammer is very useful is you want to try bumping.
