Planning to start out with locksmithing - Need some advice.

Hello,

I've been a carpenter now for 5-6 years and would like to get into the field of locksmithing. I've been looking at ways inwhich to get the training but all i can seem to find is these 2/3 day courses. Now i cant help thinking these are a quick not very imformative course, has anyone had a sucessful story with these? When i train as a carpenter i simply went to college for 3years got my NVQ 1/2/3 and got a job with a local company who trained me 3days a week on site. I want to go about this the right way and not throw my money away, what advice could you give me to start training. Also this may sound stupid but is there an actually qualification in locksmithing? And what is the name of it?

Just for your information i am based in the UK, so any advice is more than welcome but would like to hear from Uk locksmiths as im sure it's different all over. Thanks alot for you time and i'll be looking forward to hearing your advice.

For me I took the Foley-Belsaw course, this course always has mixed reviews, but a month after my completion of the whole course I landed a job with a company that has a major bank contract, and I figure I had paid for the course in a matter of days. I recommend you talk to some local locksmiths in your area and first see if you could get on with one of them, otherwise it is hard to get into a job, it takes more than just a course, there is a lifetime of info in this field, you would get more from an actuall locksmith I think.

I would say do a good correspondance course like the one listed. Having a background in business would also be an essential tool to have at your disposal as well.
