PINS STUCK SIDEWAYS! HELP

Postby socdinosaur » 24 Jun 2009 23:12

Hey I was picking my own deadbolt for practice, and I got it open. I was excited like hell, so I left the door alone for a second to frolic with glee.

Upon my return, I noticed that the keyhole was sideways, and my key would not go in to turn it. The pins won't bounce in and out, and are stuck securely down. Can someone please help me so that I can lock my god door? Pleaaaase?

Stick something into the lock ... like the back side of your pick.

Lift and apply tension the opposite direction from what you used to unlock the lock. It sounds like the top pins fell into the "bottom" of the plug when you turned it 180 degrees. A quick search would have gained you multiple replies to this same issue.

Also, don't pick locks in use. This is one reason we say not to.

Thank you for the advice. The lock is sideways, so I'm not sure if the fell to the bottom. And I would have chosen any other lock, but I couldn't find anything else legal, and I'm impatient. I'll try what you suggested. Thank you!

I still would like a little more advice from anyone, please help me out.

Nevermind. I disassembled it. Fixed it a hundred times to a new problem, too it apart without thinking, dropped the pins, up a spring. Thank for the advice, I appreciate the prompt response.

Needed a new deadbolt anyway. :)

Don't we have a thread that collects these stories of people who pick the lock they depend on before they even understand what they are doing.

I also pick my own lock when the occasion comes up, usually due to keys being in the wrong place/time. But I understand the lock and can rekey it any way I want, or replace it easily,

perhaps the rule should be newbies who pick locks in use should be prepared to buy the replacement and install it before starting.

I think we should make a sticky titled "newbies instructions for fixing the locks they broke that were in use" you know there are going to pick them anyways! instruction on how to put the pins and springs back into the lock to match the key ETC ETC.
