I recommend you put a new lock on your garage and remove the old lock as a practice lock. Take it apart and clean it inside. Make sure everything is working, then bump away.
It really does do some damage inside the lock if you keep beating away at it. There are a couple of excellent posts here about the damage and marks left inside a lock from picking or bumping repeatedly. Like the guys say, you really don't want to bump this thing if you are going to be using it.
