disassembly of a masterkeyed cylinder

Postby Guitar_J » 17 Aug 2004 22:30

This 7pin lock that I got my grubby mitts on today got me wondering...

what are some good methods that can be used to remove the pin stacks from a masterkeyed lock without loosing track of the order they were in...

I reloaded this lock I have with the master wafers that were in it and tried to disassemble while keeping everything in order.. but I'm having difficulties...

I tried a few ways. I tried to remove one pin stack at a time, I tried to slide everything out at once onto my pin tray.. nothing seems to work..

any suggestions?

Get a pinning tray. If that fails, get a small fishing tackle box. They are also sold as sewing boxes. Basically you want the one that has 5 rows of 8.

Now, pull the plug as you would normally. Cover all but one pin stack. Very gently tip the plug, and see how many pins come out. If there is one bottom pin, and one master wafer, place the bottom pin in the bottom left of the tray. This is position one. Position 2 is above it, and 3 after that, until the top. Then, continuing numbering from the bottom of the second colum.

Code: Select all
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40
4  9  14 19 24 29 34 39
3  8  13 18 23 28 33 38
2  7  12 17 22 27 32 37
1  6  11 16 21 26 31 36

That's the order of the tray.

So, you have a bottom pin in 1, and a master wafer in 2 nothing in 3. Now, do the second stack, assume it has two wafers and one bottom pin. The bottom pin goes in 6, the top wafer in 8 and the middle wafer in 7.

See where this is going?

After that part is all done, you should be able to pull the springs and drivers. They go along the top.

Go slowly and carefully,a nd you will have them all in order.

I've been using corrugated cardboard and pushing the pins out slowly. I've also taken two chunks of hardwood and clamped them together and then drilled holes where the two pieces meet thus having cylinders I can slide the entire stack out into and then I can removed the top and viola. I based it on the A1 brand sfic decoder/cominator.

thats cool - you'll want to make sure that you have all the master wafers in the plug when you remove it, as to not miss any because of using a master key to remove the cylinder...
(and having some master wafers in the spring chambers)

edit: yup, its definately 43 now
