Since I have never read the book you reference, I would suggest you read the site rules, FAQ section, and the stickies- you will find a wealth of information here on how to pick the two locks you make mention to.

First of all, I would suggest that you try and learn to pick locks from sources other than "Easy Pickings". When I originally started lock picking, I got the same set as you (Assuming you've got the Southord 5 piece pickset w/ easy pickings). I found that book extremely unhelpful, so my suggestion would be to look around on this forum, as there is some excellent info to help you get started.

As for what lock would be easier for you to start with, most Masterlocks are quite easy to pick, however the diffuculty depends greatly on the model. Somewhere on the Masterlock, there should be a lock number. Check this number against Shrubs Masterlock chart at viewtopic.php?f=9&t=23712. Generally, the lower the lock #, the easier the lock will be to open. If there are no security pins, and there are a few amount of pins in the Masterlock that you have, then it is *probably* a good and easy lock to start with.

in my prime stage (in lockpicking) my basic was starting counting the pins (from inside the cylinder) with my picktool tip with my eyes close, just feeling the pin one by one, and rechecking when i seems doubtful of which pin chamber i already am. when i become familiar with it, my second step, applying the tension wrench and picktool, again just depressing the pins one by one, applying tension, lightly, medium, and hard. with my eyes close to avoid distructions. after i was acquinted with those and get familiar of my tools and pins locations. then i start picking. hope this will help you for a start. the principle in lockpicking is DONT RUSH.
hi everyone, im glad to be a member of this very interesting community, our community of locksmiths. i hope i could help others, within my ability, and hope you can help me too, God bless us all fellow locksmiths.

I would recommend you read the stickies. Lots of info there.

Then take apart the deadbolt and make sure it's not dirty or damaged.
Put it together with only two pin stacks. When you can get that, try three and so on.

Don't use too much tension. Number one problem. Try to feel each pin with the tip of the pick, rather than just sticking the pick in and prying up till the lock opens.
