tubular question

Postby LOCKED0UT » 15 Jul 2009 8:49

Hi
We got a new pool table at work a few weeks ago. It's got a tubular lock on it, but the key is in pretty bad shape. There is a large crack down one of the pin notchs and the rest of them are pretty badly worn. My question is: Will the crappy key cause damage to the lock?

im no expert on tubulars, but i would say no. unless You have to force the key in. If the key breaks, its propably in Your pocket, not in the lock.

Take it to you local locksmith and have them make you a copy while you can. The key is just worn and its time for a new one. Should be around $10. maybe a little less or little more.

I agree with getting a new key made while it's still somewhat readable and usable. It will be well worth the price invested.

The reason I asked was because my local locksmith doesn't cut tubular keys. So the next closest is like another 45 minutes away and I never have time to get there.

I just had a thought. Anyone ever heard of an online locksmith/key cutter. You could send them the keys specs and they could send you the new keys?

There is people who do that, but normally they would want the key sent to them.

Your best bet may be asking in the BST forum for someone who can cut a key for you. I have had luck from that method before.

Have you considered that if the key is worn then the lock will also be worn.
Might also actually work out to be cheaper to replace the lock with a new one complete with 2 keys rather than just getting keys cut for the existing lock. Particully if you need to send it off.

In many cases worn key does not indicate worn lock.
Keys wear mostly in keychains, the more keys you have the more they scrub against each other and wear. Especially if you have a car key in the same ring, and it rattles hanging for ignition.
Of course the lock could be worn, but replacing the lock because the key is worn only comes in question if lock is really cheap.
