Old style lock, on antique chest

Postby Cabose » 4 Sep 2009 19:57

Hey its been awhile since I've been on these forums.
But anyway my boss just bought an antique chest (I work at a used furniture/gallery shop) However it didn't come with a key and is locked. He doesn't want to pay anyone to fix it, but we could get more money for it if it opens. So with out breaking it and with house hold tools any ideas on how to get it open. I have a modern day lock pick set, but I don't think it would work. Unless maybe I used a tension wrench.

This is the style of lock I am talking about.

Thanks

That locks like a lever lock with some wards on it. Depending on the spring tension of the lock and the diameter of the keyway you could feasibly use a bent bobby pin or a filed down allen wrench. I'm kinda new so I'm sure some others will have a lot more ideas, but those are the first things I'd try. Or if you have a pick scraper(not sure the right name) a screw driver handle with a bent point.
What most people call intelligence I call common sense.

A lot of antique furniture places have a cigar box of old keys behind the counter, and these are used as tryouts for locks that have lost their keys. Usually they will sell you a key that fits.
the type of lock you are looking at may have only one lever, its quite pickable if you know lever locks, but a key is the point so look around for such keys, the older and somewhat smaller lockshops are likely to have such keys
Antique dealers may know someone in your area that works on these locks.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!
