Is this a good set to start out with?

I looked at the FAQs new member guide but all the links were dead. I'm looking to get into lock picking as a hobby and to win some bets with my friends. Is this link up there a good set?

I've heard southord makes good stuff, just wanted the pros advice. Will it last me a long time? Are there better alternatives? Cheaper? Etc?

As far as Southord goes I think most people would recommend these for about the same price and skip the book. Most of the information can be found here.

I think the above links would only be "expensive" if you were 13 years old. keep delivering those Sunday morning newspapers.. two dollars here and there adds up quickly. maybe you'll be able to get a lockpick set AND a new Huffy.

It seems I was a bit distracted when I answered you and posted links that where in the price range the "related item" of the slim line picks that was in the corner. Sorry about that. I was trying to steer you away from buying a smaller but more expensive set with the book. Those basic picks would be fine to try out lockpicking. My only concern would be that I can't tell if those picks have handles. I'm thinking they don't. The most basic picks are just shapes punched out of sheet metal. The more expensive ones have two more sheets cut out and attached to the body of the pick to make a handle. You might be able to see the difference by checking the pics at these to links.

So out of these tools... which do you recommend for a basic set?

I know that i require a tension wrench, and a pick... But where i need help is which should I get? A long pick or a short one? Does it matter?

Start with that set. It was my first set and I still use the leather case + most of the tools in there. It comes with 4 different size tension wrenches and a whole sort of other goodies. At $30 it is not even that expensive for a complete set with a case.
