Brinks Brass Padlock

Hi guys!

I got me here a brass solid body padlock. It doesn't say anything other than the brand name on it (no model no#, etc...) I'd guess 30mm or 40mm though. Are these known to have spools in them? I'm asking because it keeps seeming like I have all the pins set but the core still won't turn. All the pins feel "dead" and not sprigny at all when in this state. I've tried pushing harder on each one but it just goes to the driver and stops and no matter how hard I push on the pins I'm not getting any counter-rotation against the tension like I've erad you should feel for a spool/mushroon/serrated pin.

Also, I found an old schlage core laying around in a box in my garage... gonna put this down and play with that for a bit, but the keyway looks kinda ugly. It looks like the key pins are almost sitting on the topmost ward! yikes... should be fun!

Ohhh. Those brinks brass padlocks are absolute EVIL. Yes, you are quite correct, they do have spools. I've even heard rumors (on the internets) that they have some serrated pins. I consider them the hardest locks I've found commercially for about 5 bucks. good luck!

If you closely at the illustration on the back of the card, or blister pack, you will see spool pins, and I believe it mentions anti-pick drivers. I don't remember if it's 4 or 5, but top tension will help you get past low cuts.

I had one a long time ago, I was never able to pick it, I cut it open, it had 5 spools! Brinks locks are very well made with great tolerances for the money you spend to buy them, 5 dollars or so!

Well, on the bright side I did get the schlage core open, that was weird going in at an angle like that to get at the pins though!

Wow... Shrug of relief. I was attempting to open one of these little things a week or so ago and after an initial chuckle to myself, I thought this thing wouldn't even put up a fight. 20 mins later it finally turned for me. Even then it never felt like it had security pins in it. I never felt anything like a false set. But it did eventually take superlight top tension to get it open. Makes so much sense now. I suddenly feel so relieved. I definatly underestimated this "evil" little thing.

I gotta get better at the top tension thing... I always seem to accidentally knock out the tension wrench. Maybe I need to modify some of my wrenches to hold better on the top or something... hmmn... food fer thought.

YAY! I finally got this bugger open with the SPP action... I got it by raking over the weekend, and finally SPPd it today. About time!

Thanks! This darn thing too me like a month and a half to pop. I'd been at it for a while before I finally posted asking about it. It's nice when a stubborn lock finally gives!
