Laptop (kensington) lock?

Postby loac » 8 Oct 2009 0:26

A couple months ago, I was burgled. Fortunately I scared the guy away so he didn't get away with anything. Shortly after that I decided to lock my laptop to my desk at home, with my Kensington laptop lock.

I also have a 2 year-old daughter who loves to hide keys...I have looked all over the place and I cannot find the key. I think she might have put it in the garbage can or something, and now it is gone forever.

My question to you is - is this type of lock pick-able by a beginner, or should I call a locksmith? I have a Southord lockpick set, and have tried the techniques described in the beginner section, with no luck. I also did a search for this and haven't found anything.

Thanks for your help!

There is a reason we do not have much information on this type of lock, we do not discuss it here.

Call a lockie, or chop it. Best suggestion at this point. You won't get much more than that.
(and other than it being a really small keyway, it should not be that hard to pick- cough cough,  )

Oh, I also killed your photo since it is a tad too oversized. 640 x 480 please as a max. (or clickable thumbnail)

Ok, I understand you have to have rules. Thanks for the response. Could you maybe just let me know what type of lock this is, so I can do some more research myself? Thanks!

Can't say for sure from the picture, but looks to be a Kensington laptop lock that has rotating disc detainer mechanism. And those are advanced material on this forum, so no public discussion on picking them.

Honestly, I think that laptop locks are like many locks more of a deterrent than a real security solution. Trust me yank hard enough and you can rip a chunk out of the laptop and it will still function (although sometime it can damage a laptop beyond repair as well, but to a burglar, it's probably worth the risk.) I've seen poor victim laptops of this many times over the years working in IT. Also, the cables can be cut, which would probably be your simplest answer so that you don't damage the laptop, or if you really want the lock mechanism off, call a locksmith.

Beyond that, GL!
