Is this something you would find useful, or do you rekey everytime someone moves out? The brand and model I'm talking about is Schlage Everest c123/c145 keyway. And those keys also have a larger bow so more room for you to stamp numbers on to, including space to stamp "do not duplicate"
You are aware that the C123/C145 keyways are non-restricted and are commonly carried by hardware stores such as Ace, Home Depot, True Value, etc. (not to mention any locksmith), right?
yikes, I did not know this. I could see a locksmith having them, but Home Depot and True Value? seriously? I know my Home Depot uses the Axxess machines, didn't realize there was an Everest blank in that display case. so much for my idea of affordable security.. Squelchtone

They are the factory defaults and there is nothing prohibiting any store from obtaining, duplicating, or selling them (or the rest of the C family, for that matter). D and F are the restricted Everest families. Read all about it here.
When this system first came out Schlage claimed that they were only going to sell the blanks to locksmiths and that the only way the "Home depot's" of the world could get blanks is if they bought them second hand from a locksmith. (of course I could have been miss-informed). This of course was only to get locksmiths to sell more of their hardware. But it doesn't/wouldn't surprise me if Schlage went back on their word. Schlages overall quality has been going down hill for a long time now. I avoid using factory Schlage blanks for duplicates. They tend to be milled wrong/poorly enough to cause issues, not always but often enough. I might be a little cranky today, I don't think this topic was about Schlage bashing.

about stamping marks on keys, keys that have an M or an X are often masterkeys, its likley that the building you have is masterkeyed, but using M or X for a master key or submaster, is probably a security flaw, use a different mark.
You can make a quikset reader key by cutting all the 6 depths on a single 6 pin blank, and just read the keys from the reader key by eye while holding the back edges of the reader key and the key being read together.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Schlage sells key managemnet software. I think it's around a grand, but when you consider the time and effort that goes into SCANNING each and every key, it's not a bad price.
Kustom Keys offer custom stamped keys and you maybe able to get them sequentially stamped. Obviously, stamping should not be done in a stupid way that would allow someone who found a key to figure out where it goes to.
I think Everest D or B series are good, so that tenants can't remove door hardware (i.e. not use deadbolt provided and install his own Kwikset KIK to allow unregistered roommates).
