Lock Safari: What's up with this lock?

Postby JK_the_CJer » 12 Jul 2009 7:52

More locks from Africa "in the wild" can be found here: http://theamazingking.com/images/africa/afrisec.html

So I noticed this dimple euro lock the other day and one side of it was in the "picked" position. The other side (double euro) was normal and locked. Was this lock picked or maybe pins removed for some reason? The room had two doors, the other was normal. The "picked" side of this lock was facing the outside of the room. Any thoughts on how this cylinder could have ended up like this? Keep in mind that locksmiths don't really exist here so I think the chances that it was picked are pretty slim:

Also, anyone seen a keyway like this before? Just curious if its just a keyway or if there might be some special high-sec-like features there:

Don't have concertina wire? Easy, just stick broken-off glass bottles in cement on the tops of your walls:

When I was in Mexico they had the same thing on top of the walls, good way to stop someone jumping over I guess, as for the lock being pick, no idea, even though the keyway is dark in the picture could you see if there was any pins in the lock? bit odd if someone had picked it.

Re the funky keyway- I believe it may just be wear and/or tear damage?

The metal looks almost distorted to me.. and it would make sense if it was distorted... IMHO.

The keyway appears to be a common yale keyway with some kind of smutz looking black that gives the impression that it has a unique keyway. Its a trick of the photography.

The keyway of that first "milano" lock looks like a badly made knock-off of a MTL. You can see that the groove on the plug is offset from the broaching. I guess it got forced that way.

Neat, I didn't notice the keyway not being inline with the slot in the plug face on the Milano. It had to have been forced. i don't think its meant to look like MTL though, pretty much every normal dimple lock over here uses a keyway that looks just like that.

The funky part of the keyway on the Victory is not a camera trick or smudge. I tried a few shots to capture it right but suck at photography (esp. in low light). There seems to be a pretty good case for that ward getting bent as if someone screwdrivered it.

broken glass or barbed wire on the top of the wall. Both of these are very useful for holding the mattress in place that you put on the wall to ease the passage.
I saw an article that is linked to lp101 years ago, about a law against this sort of thing in Germany, so the workaround was to make glass figures of pin trees, (spikey branches) and other glass figures that could not be climbed over without breaking them into shards.
