Half-Diamond vs Feeler

Postby nwkegan » 7 Nov 2009 5:06

Hey guys.

I'm just starting to learn and was wondering if it matters if I use a half-diamond pick over a feeler for the pyramid method. I switch between them, generally, but I find the feeler is more difficult to use for the kwikset deadbolt I have. Does it really matter?

Thanks.

Hi!
The hook pick gives you more feedback, so it is best to learn with.
But half diamond is very useful too, use them both.
For some locks I rake them first with a half-diamond, then finish with a hook spp.
Alltho raking opens some locks fast, you´ll want to learn to single-pin-pick, so use that hook!
Try also different tensioners on top and bottom.
I did not get that "pyramid method", what do you mean?
I´m not very experienced picker (yet), but I get my small victories every other day.
Happy picking!

Never heard of the pyramid method. There is a technique I use, where I move the pick in and out slowly over all the pins, accompanied by a gentle back and forth rocking motion. Is this the same thing?

If this is what you're talking about, it doesn't matter although a half diamond is easier to roll over the pins in both directions when you need to start paying attention and feeling around. You can use whatever you like, though. Sometimes I can use this method then SPP with the same half diamond, other times I need to switch to a hook. Depends on the lock aswell as personal preference. Now, if I'm way off the mark here and I'm babbling about something completely different to what you meant, try it anyway! It's a nice little way to get the regular pins out of the way and most of the time this movement will force a false set, allowing you to clean up SPP-style with your weapon of choice. It's not a good method for chamfered or serrated key pins though. :)

I turn to the half-diamond pick when my only feeler pick breaks.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Pyramid method:

Add 1 pin after a successful pick.

Ehhh like the other guys said, I'd rather use a short hook to SPP. I so little feedback with a half diamond.

Bill DeForrest Sr., the late owner of Major Lock Supply in Anaheim, CA, is credited with creating the "half diamond hook pick" which he successfully used for almost everything from standard pin tumbler locks to medeco cylinders. Rytan made his model for years in two different sizes, the black handle was the standard size and the blue handle was the smaller version.

Imagine a standard half diamond pick with the tip curved at the end like a hook and you have it.

To this day this pick is my all time favorite and is used in 99% of my openings.

What about the half round? I like it for SPP, I feel like the half diamond is harder to get under the pins and push em up without it sliding off... I finally got a half round and really like it.

Half ball? Hey if it suits you go for it!
And are you straight picking or levering? Its easier to lever with a half diamond.
